Thomas Percy Schultz was born in Mason City on June 24, 1942, to Percy and Irene (Morgan) Schultz. He grew up on the family farm, now a Century Farm, north of Nora Springs, attending elementary schools there. He attended Roosevelt Elementary and graduated from Mason City High School in 1960. A 1964 AA graduate of Mason City Junior College, Tom went on to earn his BA and MA degrees in industrial education from the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls in 1966 and 1970. On June 22, 1963, Tom married Patricia (Pat) Larsen at the Christian Church in Clear Lake. After graduation from UNI, Tom and Pat taught for several years in Sioux City, Iowa, before returning to North Iowa, where Tom took a job teaching in the Industrial Arts Department at Mason City High School. He continued to teach auto mechanics and other industrial courses there until his retirement in 1998. He also taught in the automotive department at NIACC for several years. Tom began farming the family farms in 1986 after his father's death. He continued to work that land, which he loved, through this spring. He also enjoyed working on his equipment, restoring cars, carpentry and inventing unique items to make a job easier or more efficient. His greatest enjoyment came from sharing his love of the farm and the things he did there with his grandchildren. Left to cherish Tom's memory are his wife of 43 years, Pat; his daughter, Lisa Schultz Templeton; son-in-law, Steve Templeton; grandchildren, Alex and Allison Templeton; sister, Jacqueline Schultz Chayne; brother-in-law, Darrell Chayne; his mother, Irene Morgan Schultz; and his mother-in-law, Gertrude Larsen. Tom was preceded in death by his father, Percy Schultz, and his grandparents, Otto and Mary (Percy) Schultz and Leon and Neva (Bawden) Morgan.
