James was born July 18, 1942, the son of Donald A. and Marie (Groh) Coe, in Mason City.  In his younger years James enlisted in the United States Air Force in the intelligence division.  After enlisting, the Air Force sent James to the University of Indiana for some specific language classes, and then based him near Berlin, Germany.  Following his discharge, he returned to, and later graduated from, the University of Indiana in Bloomington.  On January 10, 1998 James was united in marriage to Kaylene in Melbourne, Fla.  The couple has since resided in Manly.

James had an interest in attending auctions looking for and collecting old guns and antiques.  He was an avid fisherman who enjoyed casting his rod and reel whenever time allowed.  As of late, he could often be found working on and playing with his computer.  James always looked forward to watching college wrestling and the University of Notre Dame football.  He was most noted for being a devoted father, great husband, and a very kind gentleman.

James was a member of the First Assembly of God Church of Mason City.
