Mary Ziemann the daughter of Benedict and Maxine (Wilkinson) Ziemann, was born September 16, 1942, at Mercy Hospital, Mason City, IA. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith and spent her childhood years with her family actively involved the Catholic Church. She attended Mason City Community Schools, graduating from mason City High School in the class of 1960. After schooling Mary was employed for a time at Clifton's Super Market in Mason City. She later met her future husband and life partner of more than 62 years Larry Donaghy at a bakery where Larry was employed. The two were married August 17, 1963, at the Evangelical United Brethren Church on North Adams in Mason City. Following their marriage, they lived for a time in Mason City then moved to Waverly for a short time before returning to Mason City, followed by a few years living in Cedar Falls from 1968-72 and eventually moved to Clear Lake where they made their home and raised their family.
Mary and Larry's union was blessed with three children including a son David and two daughters, Ronda and Tami. Her role as a wife, mother, and grandmother was first and foremost in her life focus. She was always a loving life partner and team mate to Larry and nurturing mom to the kids. As the years past she cherished the new title of grandma and enjoyed anything that meant spending times in their presence. She and Larry supported David, Ronda and Tami along the way in all their chapters of life and were their number one cheerleaders along the way. As the family expanded to include grandkids their enjoyment of their new role and grandparents blossomed.
Mary's kind heart, passion in caring for others shone brightly in her years working outside the home for 16 years as a member of the "Direct Support Care Staff" when she was employed with Opportunity Village in Clear Lake. A perfect fit for a lady who always put the needs of others before those of her own.
Mary, Larry and the kids had done some traveling over the year's most destinations usually involved to visit relatives in Arkansas, Kentucky, and other places. They had also looked forward to a few fishing excursions to Northern Minnesota and Spooner, Wisconsin. She enjoyed playing 500 cards with Larry and friends, a friendly but competitive game of "Aggravation" with family and friends, and of course spending a few hours relaxing while watching her favorite T.V shows, "Judge Judy" and " Dateline". She was the consummate caregiver, always meticulously maintaining the world around her and always had a gentle way of being in charge and looking after Larry and the kids and their families. She was one who never wanted to give up her independence and dignity even as her health declined due to the cancer.
Her memory and legacy will be carried forward in the hearts and minds of her husband, Larry Donaghy, Osage, IA; son David Donaghy, Osage, IA and his son Zachary (Amanda) Donaghy and their kids Vanessa, Joseph, and Walter, all Grimes, and David's son Jacob (Becki) Donaghy and their kids Oliver, Lily and Maeve Donaghy, all of Britt, IA; daughter Tami (Davey) Goodale, Osage, IA and their kids Chloe (Michael) Nielsen their children Oaklee and Aksel, all of Forest City, IA; and Tami and Davey's son Justin Goodale, Osage, IA; and deceased daughter Ronda Mennenga's kids Ray (Shannon) Mennenga, TN, and Cole (Hinda) Mennenga, IA.
